Plan an anniversary around what each person wants

Ask separately: “Would you like quiet time, a walk, a meal together, or no plan this year?” Treat these as optional ideas. Discuss timing, privacy and energy before choosing one; an anniversary does not create an obligation to buy a gift or be intimate.

Agree on an easy way to postpone, change or end the plan. Spending nothing is a valid choice, and either person can decline. If you choose a gift, ask about preferences first; accepting a gift does not mean agreeing to an activity.
